Using genealogy sites to solve crimes could come into focus in legislative session
A forensic scientist loads known DNA samples while testing unknown samples in the Bexar County Crime Lab, Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021.Texas legislators are considering several new proposals to restrict law enforcement's ability to access databases from genetic testing companies, placing the state at the center of a roiling national privacy debate over a technology already solving some of the most stubborn unsolved cases.
Representatives of Texas District and County Attorneys Association took to social media this week to decry the proposed legislation and how it might hamper law enforcement. "I have made securing the data privacy of Texans a priority of mine since I first entered the Legislature," he said. He said that the larger companies are fairly transparent with consumers, but"some of these companies have played fast and loose with people’s genetic information," and given the information to other companies without consent or notice.
Genealogy databases gives investigators an expansive new pool of potential DNA matches, Rodriguez said. Most of the time, a search doesn’t return a direct result, but links them to someone in the same family tree, like a sibling or a parent. That can be a monumental breakthrough in solving older crimes.
“It’s a very useful tool for us to help identify the family and identify lost loved ones,” said Detective Scott Minyard, an investigator with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.
