Speaking after the meeting, House Speaker Rusty Bowers, R-Mesa, told The Arizona Republic that while he had initially asked proponents if the bill was introduced in response to the 2020 elections he doesn’t think that’s the case. The bill appears to address how large the county is and seeks to make it easier to move through the bureaucratic process and better serve residents, he said.
Rep. Alma Hernandez, D-Tucson, said she didn’t see how the bill would address any perceived issues raised, and it would be costly to taxpayers. He told lawmakers at Wednesday's hearing that he has worked to"rightsize" his office to meet the current and future workload. “Any attempt to paint this as retaliation on or retribution … is pure conspiracy theory,” Hoffman said.
