To summarize, Rust leaves it to the developer to handle privacy, which is beneficial in some cases but also risky and may lead to expensive errors. Daml, on the other hand, lets this be designed into the structure of the contracts themselves, thus reducing the chances of developer errors.For simplicity, we’ll assume that most business applications are divided into four tiers:As a general-purpose language, Rust finds itself in both the orchestration and the business logic layers.
It’s also interesting to note that the database layer can be either a blockchain or a database for Rust and Daml. It’s where business information is persisted. However, while Rust accesses the database and then manipulates the objects and data structures it receives, Daml is agnostic about the storage schema because it always accesses the data in terms of smart contracts to enable its privacy and security guarantees .
Rust, as a general-purpose language, is independent of the database. When application A sends the data to application B, two copies of the data are naturally created—one at either application. Thus, unless the applications share the same database, reconciliation must be carried out to ensure the data is consistent across both applications. Inconsistencies can arise from how the data structures are coded in the two applications, what the metadata means , and myriad other reasons.
