Prism Health North Texas will provide free at-home HIV test kits to Texans through the expansion of the health system's condom delivery service.Texans can now get free at-home HIV tests delivered to their door through the recently expanded Nice Package program from Prism Health North Texas as the state combats rising rates of sexually transmitted infections.

The HIV nonprofit launched the Nice Package program in 2020 with funding from the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide free monthly condom deliveries to any adult in the state. Texans can now choose from five different package options that can include latex-free condoms, internal condoms, dental dams and lubricant. An OraQuick In-Home test kit can be added to any package.

New infection statistics are harder to evaluate because of testing interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent data from 2021 showed that Dallas County had 798 new HIV diagnoses, compared to 747 in 2019 and 663 in 2020.Other STIs have seen increases as well, including Syphilis, which can lead to dementia and hearing and vision loss if left untreated.

Prism hosts frequent STI testing drives at bars, clubs and bathhouses around North Texas, but Fox said the market is saturated with testing pop-ups. People who don’t attend those venues, or those who don’t feel comfortable getting tested in public, are being missed.“We wanted to think of something that people could do in the privacy of their own homes with their own support systems around them,” Fox said. The OraQuick In-Home HIV test uses a cheek swab to check for HIV antibodies.

“Implementing at-home testing for HIV is a brilliant idea,” said Stacey Griner, assistant professor in the Department of Population & Community Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. “From COVID we’ve learned a lot, and a lot of people prefer telehealth or prefer being able to do testing like this from home.”Griner said people who are sexually active should regularly get tested for STIs, especially because the diseases are sometimes asymptomatic.
