He is prepared to step outside his ceremonial role to say what he thinks
‘We should trust the future King to exercise his power to shift opinion prudently’ about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is not the most profound or controversial contribution to world affairs in recent times. But, in its own way, the Prince’s words convey a power that goes way beyond the normal thrum and beat of global diplomacy.
Instead, applaud the moral courage of a young man who feels things deeply, and is prepared to take a chance and step outside his ceremonial role to say what he thinks. Why can’t Prince William hob-nob at the Baftas and have an opinion on world affairs, in the same way that a politician, in advance of a parliamentary debate.
But William has previous form on this issue. In 2018, he became the first member of the British Royal Family to visit the Occupied Palestinian Territories, spending time in the Jalazone refugee camp near Ramallah, and meeting the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas. “I am… struck by how many people in the region want a just and lasting peace,” he said at the time. “This is only too evident among the young people I have met, who long for a new chapter to be written in the history of this region.
