The 2023/24 NBA season is upon us and who better to preview the action than the stars of the league? This season also features a new In-Season Tournament, which should provide fans with a new viewing experience.
DAVID MUNDEE The postseason picture is a little clearer in some Wiregrass regions, but remains cloudy in some others heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.Class 7A, Region 2Central of Phenix City has wrapped up the region title, but there is a battle going on for the final three region playoff spots. Dothan, Enterprise are all tied with 4-2 region marks and Opelika is 4-3 heading into the final two weeks of region play.
Taking out the common wins over Opelika, Smiths Station, Prattville, J.A.G. and Percy Julian, it would leave each team with wins over three teams. Dothan has wins over Carroll, Baker and Enterprise, while Auburn has wins over Hoover, Dothan and Ramsey and Enterprise wins over Eufaula, Auburn and Rehobeth.
If two teams tie for the lead then the head-to-head match-up between the two would break that tie. Auburn beat Dothan, while Dothan beat Enterprise and Enterprise beat Auburn. Class 3A, Region 2With two region weeks left, Straughn and Providence Christian are both in the state playoffs. Houston Academy, though 5-1, has not clinched a spot as two potential losses could put them out in a three-way tie with Opp and Pike County. The Raiders can clinch with a win in either region game left.This week’s schedule has Houston Academy at Providence Christian, Opp at Straughn and Pike County at home against Daleville .
If Wicksburg wins and Ariton beats Samson , the three teams end in a tie with 5-2 records and it would go to tiebreakers. Eventually, it will come down to opponents wins. Ariton currently leads the tiebreaker. Wicksburg can’t win the tiebreaker because it is too far behind. Class 2A, Region 3Wiregrass team Goshen finishes third in the region regardless of how it does against Horseshoe Bend this week. Highland Home-Reeltown play for the region title with the loser finishing second. Luverne finishes fourth.
GeorgiaEarly County has already won Region 1-A, Division II, while Seminole County can clinch a state playoff spot with a win over Terrell County this Friday.Keion Dunlap, Enterprise: Dunlap rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in the Wildcats’ 28-14 win over Opelika. Kadyn Mitchell, Houston Academy: Mitchell threw for 298 yards and five touchdowns off 10-of-15 passing in the Raiders’ 49-20 win over Opp.
Rod Jackson, Houston Academy: Jackson caught five passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns in the Raiders’ 49-20 win over Opp. Antron Mitchell, Eufaula: Mitchell caught three passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ 17-6 win over Rehobeth. Brayden Whitehead, G.W. Long: Whitehead was in on 12 tackles, including seven solos and three for losses, in G.W. Long’s 24-6 win over Abbeville. He also rushed for 83 yards on nine carries with a TD and added four receptions for 59 yards to go with a 50-yard punt return for touchdown.
