The premier of the British Virgin Islands has been arrested in Miami after allegedly agreeing to help a federal informant posing as a member of the Sinaloa cartel move thousands of kilos of cocaine through his country’s port, federal court documents say.

Premier Andrew Fahie, 51, was arrested at Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport after he boarded what had been portrayed as a private jet and inspected shopping bags filled with $700,000 in cash, the complaint says.“Why am I getting arrested,” he is alleged to have said, according to the documents. “I don’t have any money or drugs.”
"Today is yet another example of DEA’s resolve to hold corrupt members of government responsible for using their positions of power to provide a safe haven for drug traffickers and money launderers in exchange for their own financial and political gain," she said in a statement. In a separate statement, U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss called the allegations “appalling” and said she was holding an emergency meeting with the territory’s cabinet later Thursday.

British Virgin Islands Officials Charged in Drug ConspiracyU.S. authorities say the premier of the British Virgin Islands and the director of the Caribbean territory’s ports have been arrested on drug smuggling charges in South Florida. A criminal complaint shows that Premier Andrew Alturo Fahie and Managing Director Oleanvine Maynard were arrested Thursday by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents at Miami-Opa-locka Executive Airport and charged with conspiracy to import cocaine and conspiracy to launder money. Officials said Fahie and Oleanvine Maynard had been at the airport to meet with Mexican drug traffickers, who in fact were undercover DEA agents, to see a shipment of $700,000 in cash that the the BVI officials expected to receive for helping smuggle cocaine from Colombia to Miami and New York.
