“Painted Cloth,” a new exhibition opening in August at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, shows how people in the Spanish American colonies used dress to assert status

“Power dressing” may not have been a catchphrase in colonial Latin America, but it was undoubtedly a familiar concept. For the elite, a command of fashion signaled status, wealth and worldly sophistication. For others, it was a savvy tool for turning a stratified social system to their advantage. In their clothing and other objects of display, people strove to present themselves as they wanted to be seen.
“Painted Cloth: Fashion and Ritual in Colonial Latin America,” a new exhibition opening Aug. 14 at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, explores how they did it. Featuring 75 objects—paintings, sculptures, prints, furnishings, clothing and other textiles—the show documents a dynamic exchange of ideas, images and styles across Latin America and beyond in the 1700s. “There is a lot of complexity that needs to be acknowledged” in colonial Spanish society, said the show’s curator, Rosario I.
