San Diego State’s ‘Punt God’ could fix the Chargers’ special teams issues that have plagued them for many seasons
INDIANAPOLIS — Matt Araiza’s viral 80-yard kicks and a historic season at San Diego State got him a podium at the NFL Scouting Combine. It might not sound like a big deal, but it’s not normal for a punter to have his own news conference at the annual event.
The Chargers spoke to Gardner and Araiza at the combine. Landing both prospects would fill position needs, but that’s a dream scenario because Gardner will likely be long gone if the Chargers decide to stay at No. 17 for the first round of the draft. Araiza briefly spoke with employees of the Chargers because they didn’t use one of their 40 formal interviews allowed at the combine on the punter. Formal interviews are often conducted by general managers and head coaches.
The Chargers likely didn’t need a formal interview with Araiza because they’re well aware of his kicking gifts.
