The closure will run every night from March 15 through April 30, and will encompass the entire beachfront between Shark Lane and Churchwell Drive.
Members officially signed off on one specific stretch of the beach to close at night starting on Friday.
It was the official second reading of Ordinance 1641, which will close the sandy beach from 10:00 p.m. through 4:00 a.m. every night from Mar. 15 through Apr. 30.The closure will include the area just outside of the popular restaurant Pineapple Willy’s. The Panama City Beach Police Department estimates that roughly 90% of their call volume during the spring comes from that specific area.
Chief J.R. Talamantez says that this nighttime closure will allow his officers to focus on keeping the rest of Panama City Beach safe during the busy spring season. ”When you have three, four, 5,000 kids in one specific location, it takes a vast amount of resources down there to ensure that everybody is following the law and doing what they’re supposed to do. Those officers have to be taken off the roadway and have to be taken away from answering calls for service,” Talamantez said. “It will lengthen the time that, if you call 911, our officers can be able to get to you.
