The pontiff stood before a room of nearly 200 Indigenous delegates in the Sala Clementina, one of the halls of the Apostolic Palace on Friday, and asked for God’s forgiveness for the deplorable conduct of church members.

Federal Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller said on Friday that the apology was not only symbolic, but “has real and concrete repercussions on how we move forward as a country. It is an important step toward accountability, reconciliation, and healing for families, survivors and communities who are living the impacts of discriminatory policies to this day.”
