It’s the U.S.-China meeting that everyone knows about but neither country wants to talk about. What will it yield? Probably not very much
Former U.S. officials and outside analysts expect few, if any, diplomatic breakthroughs. It’s possible, though, that the meeting could help dial down the heated rhetoric on both sides, at least for a while.
“My understanding is that the Chinese want to continue to appear being constructive and trying ‘normal diplomacy,’” a former State Department official said. “Pompeo can hardly reject a request for a meeting from his Chinese counterpart, especially if they are willing to agree to have it for the second time in the U.S. and outside Washington D.C., a pretty big protocol affront.”traveledTrump has boasted about the deal, which followed months of a tariff-driven trade war between the two countries.
Daniel Russel, a former senior Asia official in the Obama administration, said one reason little progress is expected in Hawaii is that Pompeo is at the table. The secretary of State has been exceptionally harsh in recent months toward China on several issues. As a result he’s beenin China’s state-controlled media. The outlets have called him, among other insults, “evil,” “insane” and the “common enemy of mankind.”
Earlier this month, Pompeo released a statement blasting the ruling Chinese Communist Party for its commentary on the protests that have gripped the U.S. following the killing of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody.
