BREAKING: The PM's spokesperson says the anti-strikes bill is 'not designed to prevent people striking' and it aims to 'strike balance between ability to strike and providing safe levels' of service. More here: 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602
Sky News and Tortoise Media have worked for months to put together the Westminster Accounts - which details the money entering UK politics.
"This law could make effective strike action illegal and workers could be sacked for exercising their right to withdraw their labour. Speaking to journalists this morning, the prime minister's official spokesperson said the level of service people can expect will be the same as the last strikes. The spokesperson added:"The prime minister said the government would continue to act in a way that was open, fair and affordable – noting that inflation remained the biggest threat to everyone's wages."At 11.13am, we reported that the prime minister flew to Leeds and back yesterday when he visited a healthcare centre.
But the timing of the bill’s introduction now, in the middle of the current wave of strike action, seems to many a deliberate effort to inflame the situation – a signal of the government’s bullish intent. The government, however, argues the laws are being brought in to protect public safety. This morning the Business Secretary Grant Shapps told Kay Burley similar legislation works in places like France, Italy Spain and Germany and that the idea is to avoid a “postcode lottery” of services during walk outs, potentially putting lives at risk.
After months of refusing to even talk about the issue of pay, we understand the health secretary was at least discussing a number of options with the unions yesterday – including the possibility of backdating next year’s pay offer, which might potentially enable both stories to claim success without backing down.
It was accompanied by the caption:"Leeds, United Kingdom. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak boards an RAF plane as he heads to visit the Rutland Healthcare Centre at the Leeds Community Healthcare. Picture by Simon Dawson / No 10 Downing Street."
