Hundreds of people gathered at the Cenotaph to observe two minutes of silence to commemorate the UK's war dead at 11am, while violent clashes erupted between police and union flag-waving protesters attempting to reach Whitehall.
The Met later said officers had detained a ‘large group’ of counter-protesters Nearly 100 counter-protesters have been arrested after clashes between far-right groups and police either side of the Armistice Day ceremony in central London today. Some 82 were held in Tachbrook Street, Pimlico, to ‘prevent a breach of the peace’ as this week’s pro-Palestine march passed through the capital, with 10 others detained for other offences.
‘They have faced unacceptable violence, including people throwing missiles and a metal barrier. ‘Anyone genuinely wishing to observe the event could do so from behind barriers on the pavement which is open along one entire side of Whitehall. Officers’ efforts are on keeping the road itself clear around the Cenotaph.’ The force added that it ‘will use all the powers and tactics available to us to prevent’ the counter-protesters from confronting the main march.
