The Met's 'intelligence gathering' in schools seems to be about intimidating Muslim communities into submission or silence

The words “Muslim” or “Palestinian” don’t need to be mentioned for it to be clear who this alarming and dystopian move will target. This looks to me very much like part of a wider social and political crackdown on support of Palestinians in public spaces.have been dismissed as extremist gatherings by elements of the tabloid press and “hate marches” by Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

You only have to look at the language to know that only certain political opinions, views and behaviours are the ones that might find themselves on the receiving end of this so-called “intelligence gathering” – and it certainly isn’t those being parroted by every Western leader, including our own. Even the term “intelligence” itself creates a layer of criminalisation that is rarely used towards communities that are not already routinely policed and disenfranchised.

Teachers are already saddled with the paradoxical duty to sniff out signs of radicalisation while also teaching children that “British values” means free speech, but to highlight schools as specific targets in which information will be “fed back” to aid and inform counter-terror strategy is a truly eerie precedent. It erodes our status as teachers and our duty to protect and nurture.
