Health minister Maria Caulfield said she understood police have been asked to look into possible access of Princess of Wales medical records
Police are being asked to look into claims that hospital staff might have tried to access the Princess of Wales’ medical records. Speculation has been mounting about how Kate Middleton is doing following surgery on her abdomen earlier this year.
It is a criminal offence for any staff in an NHS or private healthcare setting to access the medical records of a patient without the consent of the organisation’s data controller. Health minister Maria Caulfield has this morning said there are “hefty implications” for anyone who attempts to go through patients’ notes.
“So there are rules in place and the Information Commissioner can levy fines, that can be prosecutions, your regulator, so as a nurse my regulator would be the NMC , can take enforcement action.” It comes after the Information Commissioner’s Office launched a probe into the suspected breach. They confirmed it has received a report and is “assessing the information provided”.
