A plumbing expert says trying the advice could be dangerous and expensive to fix
Leading plumbers have raised concerns over a viral TikTok trend that encourages the use of fabric softener in toilet tanks. The experts say that the “hack” is a potential hazard to plumbing systems, causing nightmare damage to your toilet and blockages that only lead to costly repairs.
The trend gained traction after TikTokers such as Natalie Hyde shared videos showcasing the addition of fabric softener to toilet tanks, claiming it creates a refreshing fragrance with every flush. A similar hack has also been endorsed by other TikTokers, which involves placing a plastic bottle filled with fabric softener, bicarbonate of soda, lime juice and water inside the toilet tank. By placing a small hole in the bottle it slowly releases the mixture with every flush.
Peter Clayton, plumbing expert from Trade Plumbing, warned: “While it may be tempting to try out unconventional methods for achieving a pleasing scent in the bathroom, using fabric softener in toilet tanks is not recommended. Fabric softener contains chemicals that leave behind a thick, sticky residue within the pipes.
"Over time, this residue can accumulate, having a similar effect as cooking fat and therefore leading to blockages and potentially catastrophic plumbing emergencies." With the recent viral TikTok "hacks", Peter emphasises that the risks extend beyond potential pipe blockages: “Mixing different chemicals, such as those found in fabric softener, with toilet tank water can result in dangerous reactions that pose harm to both human health and the plumbing system itself”, he said.
