This is in response to watchdogs Transport Focus and London TravelWatch announcing they opposed every single planned closure due to issues such as the impact on accessibility

Plans to close railway station ticket officers across England have been scrapped. Transport Secretary Mark Harper confirmed the Government has instructed train operators to withdraw proposals which were previously brought forward because of pressure from ministers to cut costs.

Ticket offices in Lancashire and Cumbria that were set to close included Accrington, Burnley, Oxenholme, Chorley, Ulverston and Whitehaven. In September, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suggested closing ticket offices was “the right thing for the British public and British taxpayers” as “only one in 10 tickets are sold currently in ticket offices”.

“Significant amendments and changes have been secured by the watchdog – for example, reverting to existing times when staff will be on hand at many stations. Some train companies were closer than others in meeting our criteria.
