that have personal significance to our editors.was reporting on the beginning of the collagen lip-plumping era and we needed a photograph to illustrate the article. Irving Penn, the legendary photographer and my frequent collaborator, liked to use popular expressions as a starting point for some of his shoots. For this one, we were inspired by one from the 1950s: the bee-stung lip. All I needed to do was to find a model with the best plump lips—and some bees. Yes, the one in the photo is alive.
It was the wrong time of year for New York bees. We found some in Arizona and flew them here with their beekeeper. As soon as they arrived at the studio, he put his little charges in the fridge. The cold dispatched them into hibernation mode, making them sleepy, quiet, and harmless. Our brave model was Estella Warren. She was fearless as the beekeeper put one drowsy bee after another on her lips. She even seemed to enjoy the presence of the furry little creatures on her mouth—at one point she suddenly stuck her tongue out with a bee on the end of it! Penn whispered directions, “Close your lips. Open just a little, a little more please. Make a different shape.
After several hours of shooting, the film went out to be developed, and we all anxiously waited for the results. Penn was very pleased, and so we were all finished.
