After advising residents they may want to switch to bottled water Sunday afternoon following a chemical spill into a Delaware River tributary, Philadelphia officials said the city’s tap water would be safe to drink at least through Monday night.

While no contaminants have been found in Philadelphia’s water system following the spill, “we cannot be 100% certain there will not be traces of these chemicals in the tap water throughout the entire afternoon,” Mike Carroll, deputy managing director for the city’s Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability, said at a news conference Sunday morning.

He said there was no risk that contaminants would be present in the city’s water system “before about 2 p.m.” When Shannon Hogan arrived at the Target in Snyder Plaza in South Philadelphia, it was “picked clean,” with mostly specialty waters, like Smart Water, remaining. While shopping Sunday afternoon, she saw people getting the alert from the city on their cell phones, “suddenly putting the pieces together of why every cart was loaded with water.”

“It’s like the material you find in paint,” Thomas told 6ABC. “It’s your typical acrylic paint you have in your house, that’s what really this material is, in a water base.”The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said that as of Sunday morning, “no additional product was leaving the facility and entering the Delaware River.” It said that “contaminants have not been detected at drinking water intakes at this time,” and there were not signs of harm to fish or wildlife.
