In the wake of BLM uprisings in June, two protest encampments of unhoused people have formed in Philadelphia. The encampments, which organizers say will stay in place until all residents are housed, function as self-administered “cop-free zones.”
The two locations, James Talib-Dean Camp, on Ben Franklin Parkway, and Camp Teddy, in the parking lot of the Philadelphia Housing Authority , reflect organizers’ belief that housing insecurity is not a binary between homeless and housed, but a spectrum.
As negotiations with the city determine the fate of the encampments and their residents, activists and volunteers have continued to supply the camps with a steady stream of donated food, clothes, hygiene products, and tents. City spokesperson Mike Dunn estimated that along the spectrum of housing-insecure people in Philadelphia, there are currently “nearly 5,000 [people] who live in temporary and emergency housing programs,” in addition to more than 900 people who completely lack shelter.
