NARBERTH, Pa.—When Zakiyyah Boone heard a stand-up comedian complain about the lousy benefits he had received working as a teacher, she didn’t laugh. She offered him a job.
Ms. Boone, chief executive of Wonderspring Early Education, is desperate to hire workers for the five child-care centers and five before- and after-school care sites she runs in the Philadelphia area.
