Derry songwriter composed 'Home from the Sea' after his brother Brian died following an accident in Lough Swilly
Derry singer-songwriter Phil Coulter has told how his brother's death in a windsurfing accident led to the creation of the RNLI anthem 'Home from the Sea'.
The 'Town I Loved So Well' writer, speaking to the RNLI 200 Voices podcast series how he composed 'Home from the Sea' to help create a greater awareness of the work of the RNLI. He joined the campaign for a service and three years later in 1987 the first inshore lifeboat was stationed on Lough Swilly.
Locals with a special kinship to their lifeboat station, a crew member who’s been on service for a generation, or the family of someone rescued by an RNLI frontline lifesaver – each episode hopes to take the listener on a journey through a touching story.
