The EPA’s proposal would attempt to limit the amount of PFAS in drinking water to the lowest level that tests can detect, and would be a significant change from the agency’s current recommendations. The proposal would set limits of 4 parts per trillion – down from the current guidance of 70 parts per trillion -- for two common types of PFAS compounds called PFOA and PFOS. In addition, the EPA wants to regulate the combined amount of four other types of PFAS.
PFAS can exist as both groundwater and airborne contaminants that enter the environment in different ways depending on the facility. Airports and military bases, for example, utilize fire fighting foam for certain types of fires, particularly those involving combustible liquids. Industrial facilities use PFAS in certain manufacturing processes. And wastewater treatment plants see PFAS accumulate in the sludge that is a byproduct of treatment.
