Elaine Graham (nee Pringle) says her daughter Rebecca could have died after taking unwell at Hillside School on the Barony Campus, Cumnock.
A furious mum has accused education bosses of 'failing in their duty of care' towards her severely disabled daughter when she took ill at school.Rebecca, 11, who lives with cerebral palsy, microcephaly, epilepsy and scoliosis of the spine, was suffering from pneumonia. But Elaine, 32, from Dalmellington, has written to the Health and Safety Executive, outlining what she believes is a breach of health and safety regulations.
She said: “Rebecca is recovering, but I am very concerned at how the school responded and the procedures that the education authority has for medical emergencies, especially for those with special needs. According to Elaine, one official told her that the school “did not need” to call an ambulance as their “only protocol” is to call a parent.
The statement goes on: “The council also wishes to confirm that the wellbeing of the young person was fully considered at all times by the school. The staff at Hillside School are caring, professional and very experienced. They ensured that action was taken to keep the young person comfortable and were, as always, prepared to call emergency services.”
An independent report at the time ruled her brain was starved of oxygen with staff 'failing to realise' what was wrong.
