ECHO exclusive as Connor O'Neill chats to Peter McGrail ahead of his WBA super-bantamweight continental title fight against Fran Mendoza.
First, his beloved Blues will make the trip across Stanley Park to take on Liverpool in the 243rd Merseyside derby on Saturday afternoon. Then, just hours later, McGrail will make his way to the ring at the M&S Bank Arena to fight for his first professional title against Fran Mendoza.
“It was a double last time, although that wasn’t a derby, but I think the odds on a double this time are a bit worse, but we keep the spirits high,” he told the ECHO. And he believes bouts against the unbeaten Colombian Mendoza are the small steps he needs to take to make his dream of fighting at Bramley-Moore Dock a reality.
One of Merseyside’s most decorated amateur boxers, McGrail, who trains out of the renowned Everton Red Triangle Gym under Paul Stevenson, will be fighting for the vacant WBA super-bantamweight continental title in just his eighth professional fight on Saturday night.
