The Devils advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2012. The Sharks did so in 2016. He guided the Golden Knights to back-to-back appearances in the league semifinals in 2020 and 2021. “You can’t be around better people or in a better situation,” DeBoer said of Detroit. “That’s been the most influential thing that has happened to me — was being around those people at that age.”When Karmanos bought the Hartford Whalers, he already owned the Detroit Jr. Red Wings. In building his NHL staff, he looked toward his OHL staff. Rutherford became the GM in Hartford. Maurice, at 28 years old, became the Whalers coach. That opened the door for DeBoer.
If you ask DeBoer, he’ll tell you the Stars are getting a different coach than the one who arrived in Florida over a decade ago. “He has always had the ability to quickly figure out what’s important, what’s not and to act on it very, very precisely,” Maurice said. “He sees a problem, he’s not going to let it go, and he deals with it. He doesn’t run around and do five problems. He picks the most important one, and he deals with it.”
