Damian Widdowson, operators director of Nottingham Pest Control Limited, said the increased media coverage of the problem reflected the reality of what he had seen in Nottinghamshire
A pest expert has warned bed bug infestations are on the rise in Nottinghamshire and has issued five vital tips to help stop the critters. The current outbreak of the pests, which has been widely reported across the UK, is believed to have started in France - and people returning from holidays and the Rugby World Cup are believed to have brought them back to the UK.
"They're cosmopolitan so they move around with us by attaching themselves to suitcases or clothing and end up in our homes - then they start breeding and then before you know it you have an explosion of them. Cleaning does help, you have to change your bedsheets on a regular basis and hoover and dust, but it is not the only thing that stops them - you could have the tidiest room in the world but be unlucky enough to bring them in from elsewhere.
Mr Widdowson said it was unlikely the tiny parasite would make you ill, adding: "They'll feed on you and then you might get irritation and a little bump and sometimes there can be a number of bites in a row on your body. But it's not too dissimilar to a flea bite, you're very unfortunate if it becomes anything more serious."
