All traffic has been stopped on the M66 this evening following a serious crash that has left one person in a critical condition. Two others were also injured in the two-car smash on northbound carriageway, which remains closed by the emergency services.
The busy motorway is shut off between the M60/M62 and J3 due to what National Highways have described as a multi vehicle collision. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that two cars were involved. Pictures from the scene show a huge line of traffic following the crash, with emergency services currently on the scene. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "This evening on the M66 in Bury a serious road traffic collision between two cars has injured three people, one critically. Police, North West Ambulance Service, and firefighters from Blackley, Bury and Whitefield fire stations are in attendance on the motorway which is closed and is expected to be closed for several hours. Two people have been taken to hospital and a third person received treatment at the scene."
