Manchester City played out a Premier League classic with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which ended 4-4 after Cole Palmer's injury-time penalty
Manchester City’s win at Stamford Bridge last season could have felt like vindication for Pep Guardiola. It was early January and a time when the treble looked a long way away. The debate wasn’t over how many trophies City would win, but who should be in the team.
There was very little control on show on Sunday, but then it feels like Guardiola’s City have learnt to lean into the occasional bit of chaos. Or 108 minutes of unhinged madness as this game turned out to be. When Grealish stepped off the bench just before the hour mark this time, City led a gun-slinging shootout of a game 3-2 and everybody was on the edge of their seats.
There were times when Doku left Chelsea’s defenders with twisted blood, but also times when he watched Reece James sprint past him and Josip Gvardiol get overloaded it. But it really was ridiculous fun. When Mateo Kovacic replaced Julian Alvarez with 10 minutes to go it felt like Guardiola was finally putting some of his weapons away, but when Akanji drifted out to the left wing in one prolonged spell of pressure with five minutes to go the Catalan sat back and watched. City kept it moving, kept probing, and a couple of minutes later Kovacic’s blocked shot fell to Rodri, whose drive was deflected in off Thiago.
