Labour's Winter Fuel Allowance change means millions won't get money
A contentious alteration to the Winter Fuel Allowance will result in millions of pensioners no longer receiving a payment between £250 and £600 to assist with their energy bills this winter.
However, the government is amending the benefit so it is only paid to state pensioners who are eligible for one of six existing benefits. The tighter eligibility criteria have been introduced, according to Ms Reeves, in an effort to save £1.5bn from the financial 'black hole' Labour alleges was left by the previous government, reports The Express.Now, those on the state pension will need to claim at least one of six benefits in order to qualify for the winter fuel payments.
Similarly, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance and Income-related Employment and Support Allowance are legacy benefits that are gradually being replaced by Universal Credit. However, state pensioners don't qualify for Universal Credit due to age restrictions, except in cases where one partner of a couple is below the state pension age.
