The Pennsylvania Capitol is honoring contributions and achievements of women veterans as Women Veterans Day inches closer this Wednesday.

Starting at noon Monday and continuing throughout the day, women veterans will be sharing their experiences in the military and how they have helped pave the way for future generations. In 1948, President Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent members of the armed forces. This act was a significant step forward, providing women with opportunities to pursue full military careers.

Senator Tracy Pennycuick, who represents the 24th senatorial district and is an army combat veteran, said, “There were a lot of jobs that weren't open to women in the military, so it has changed so much, and I'm proud to say that it's a lot more integrated, a lot more opportunities for women, and I see that. My three daughters serve, and I see what they have experienced is very different from what I experienced.

Nowadays, women are commanding ships, serving in combat and taking on roles that were once unimaginable. The ceremony recognizes these achievements and the fact that women have always contributed to military efforts, from the Revolutionary War to present-day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The federal government says that by 2040, an estimated 17% of women will make up the total veteran population.

The Women Veterans Day event will take place at the Pennsylvania Capitol Rotunda at noon and is open to the public.
