For decades, Penn State has tried to create an artificial heart, with much of the research and testing taking place in Dauphin County.

Photo credit: Penn State College of Medicine.Penn State College of Medicine said Wednesday it received a federal grant of more than $3 million it will use to try to create an artificial heart that could be permanent for some people.
However, many people have lived on artificial hearts or heart assist devices while waiting for a heart transplant. These involve a driver unit outside the body and aren’t considered permanent, although some patients have lived outside the hospital for several years before getting a transplant. Such a heart could provide an alternative for people who aren’t candidates for transplant because of their age or other medical problems.
Another well known device from Penn State was the “Arrow LionHeart,” which, while not an artificial heart, was the world’s first totally implantable heart assist device. It was intended for people with end-stage heart failure who were ineligible for heart transplant in their present condition.
