SINGAPORE - Former senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is leading the race to be Singapore’s next president, with 70 per cent of the vote, based on a sample count released by the Elections Department at 10pm on Friday.

The numbers are said to be fairly indicative of the possible outcome for the election, with previous sample counts typically having a confidence level of 95 per cent, plus or minus four percentage points. “Some of them had to start at 5am; they have been going through the day, they had to deal with some computer glitches in the morning but they dealt with it very well, I thought.
