The top official's daily fee will be increasing to £1,000.
The board of officials monitoring improvements at Nottingham City Council have been given a pay rise that will have to be met by the authority. The city council has been under the watch of the Government 's Improvement and Assurance Board since January 2021, over issues including the illegal spending of housing money.
The IAB has been sending quarterly reports to the Government on the council's progress, with the council having repeatedly been warned that taxpayer-funded commissioners could be sent in to take control if sufficient improvements are not made. Nottinghamshire Live understands that the city council is on the verge of issuing a bankruptcy notice, with an official announcement possible in the coming days.
The IAB's last update on progress at Nottingham City Council said that there was a "distinct lack of urgency" in terms of making improvements. The Government's intervention at Nottingham City Council is set to last until September 2024, unless this is amended beforehand.The IAB was given more powers last year, meaning that it can now direct rather than guide the council's improvement activities, and these extra powers mean that its members are now being given a pay rise.
The two other independent members of the IAB will also be getting a pay rise, with their daily fee going from £800 to £900. The Government's letter says: "The council are directed to meet these fees, and the Secretary of State expects Nottingham City Council to backdate this uplift to the start of the statutory intervention on 2 September 2022.
The next update from the IAB is expected in the coming days, with the council having said that it is "working hard" to avoid commissioners being sent in. On that issue, Government minister Lee Rowley said after the last IAB update: "I will continue to assess whether the exercising of further powers under the Local Government Act 1999, including the appointment of commissioners, will be necessary on receipt of your next report.
