Pato O'Ward takes second IndyCar race at Iowa.
As Josef Newgarden showed yet again yesterday, he is IndyCar's current short oval master. He proved it again today, racing closely with teammate Will Power and eventually grabbing a sizable lead he would hold through the majority of the race. Then, 3/4ths of the way through the 300-lap race, it all went wrong.
The biggest benefactor was Pato O'Ward, who ran a relatively close third all day and moved past Will Power on the pit cycle before Newgarden's crash. At one point, O'Ward was the only driver within 20 seconds of the leading Penske pair. When he moved up to second and inherited the lead, he used that pace to get away from Power on the final restart and built that gap through lapped traffic to take the race win.
The result leaves Ericsson with a ten point championship lead on Power, with all of Dixon, Newgarden, O'Ward, and Palou between 30 and 50 points back. Apart from that group of clear contenders, only McLaughlin remains within 100 points of the leaders.
