Frontline medics express concerns over proposed regulatory changes that blur the boundaries between doctors and physician associates, putting patient safety at risk.

Patient safety will be at risk due to ‘alarming and unsafe’ plans over how physician associates are regulated, say frontline medics

The issue has come under the spotlight following publication of the Government’s long-term workforce strategy for the NHS in England, which will mean the number of associates increases significantly amid record staff shortages. Currently managed by the Royal College of Physicians through a voluntary register, PAs are set to be moved to a statutory GMC register without undergoing equally rigorous checks, DAUK said.the head of DAUK wrote: “The absence of a clearly defined scope of practice for PAs and AAs, set by the GMC, is alarming. Allowing local settings to establish these boundaries could lead to further confusion and possible exploitation of both doctors and PAs, as well as compromise patient safety.

In July 2019, the Department of Health and Social Care with the support of the four UK governments, asked the GMC to regulate both PAs and AAs. The British Medical Association has called for the roles to be renamed “physician assistant” and “anaesthetic assistant” to be “more reflective of the role these professionals play”.
