Celtic fans left the game early as Atletico took their ten men apart with a 6-0 rout and Pat Nevin can't blame them.
Pat Nevin defended the Celtic fans who had seen enough and walked out early in their Champions League humbling against Atletico Madrid.
Brendan Rodgers' team had a night to forget despite competing for long spells in the first half in Spain. They conceded early to Antoine Griezmann but largely held firm until they were reduced to 10 men midway through the first half after Daizen Maeda was shown a straight red. Even then they didn't crumble but Alvaro Morata's goal on the stroke of half time was the killer blow. And a second-half rout ensued, Griezmann and Morata striking one more each while Samuel Lino and Saul Niguez piled on the misery.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Nevin said it was 'unusual' to see so many Celtic fans leaving early but couldn't help but sympathise. He said after Lino's goal: “It’s unusual because it’s not usually the case for Celtic fans. They have come a long way and spent their money. They make a lot of noise, but now an awful lot have gone."
Morata and later Saul added to the scoreline as Celtic were ultimately taken for six; a defeat that leaves them needing two wins of their own and a Lazio collapse to even finish third in their section. The away section of the ground was largely empty after Saul's goal and Nevin said at that point: “You know what? With the pain of a 6-0 defeat, for a team that isn’t used to losing domestically, that is tough to take...so I do understand why some have left.
