Bus riders used Rosa Parks' birthday to talk about how a proposed bill could help close inequities for minority communities needing better transportation.
Several bus riders told stories about difficulties using the current bus system, in support oflegislation sponsored by Assemblyman Daniel Benson, and State Senator Joseph Vitale, both D-Middlesex. The bill is currently in committee.
Providing “well-maintained vehicles that meet federal and state health, safety, and vehicle inspection requirements” is one of the 10 areas the bill would require NJ Transit to address. “It’s Rosa’s birthday...to be so many generations in and we are facing the same issues, is sad,” said Tanisha Garner, a resident of the Ironbound section of Newark. “We have to have conversations about the Bill of Rights. I would like to come back next year and to say we’ve accomplished two things, the funding and the Bill of Rights.”
Danna Dennis of East Orange, switches between three bus routes to commute to and from her job in Manhattan.
