A false alarm triggered the evacuation, a spokesperson for the airport confirmed
An alarm went off in the Terminal 1 departures lounge just before 12.30pm. Passengers had to be evacuated 'to ensure their safety'.
One eyewitness said people were asked to leave the boarding gates and main terminal and move into the duty-free area. A spokesperson for the airport said the alarm was found to be false 'within minutes'Passengers were then able to return to the departure lounge. A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said: "An alarm was triggered in Terminal 1 shortly before 12.30pm meaning it had to be evacuated to ensure passenger safety.
"Within minutes we were able to determine that it was a false alarm and begin letting passengers back into the departure lounge. We apologise for any inconvenience.”Read more of today's top stories here
