‘Safety is number one’: Parents learn about safe gun storage at Fort Bend ISD back-to-school fair
Bilalah Turner chatted with a volunteer and accepted a free gun lock at a Wednesday night back-to-school event while her daughters unwrapped Smarties and munched on the tart candy.
Morrison manned a table near the entrance to the noisy cafeteria at Dulles High School in Sugar Land during a Fort Bend ISD mental health and wellness fair. She handed out basic gun locks and postcards with tips about gun safety while engaging parents in conversations about the politically charged and nationally contested topic.
“Safety is number one before learning for me,” she said. “There’s just much more that we as parents have to think about in this day and time versus when I was growing up as a kid.”As Texas reels from Uvalde, these 19 Houston-area kids are a reminder gun violence happens every day The group is not against guns and approaches the topic with no judgement, Morrison said, noting that her husband has several guns locked up at home.
