The genesis of the after-school program was the idea that kids in the Excelsior already possessed the skills to ride but needed a space to learn more. Students are placed in pairs, and the more experienced students guide the novices on how to properly pick up a fallen bike. At more than 100 pounds, it isn’t an easy task for most teenagers.
“My wife was like, ‘you’ve been talking about starting this class forever. You either have to get up and do it or stop talking about it,’” he said. Aspiring motorcycle mechanics and riders don’t need any prior experience or equipment to take the course — the class provides tools, safety equipment and dirt bikes. Students are asked to only bring “a positive attitude, patience and an open mind.”
The program would also help students who are interested in learning a trade such as automotive studies get into trade schools.
