Padres play 17 of next 19 games against sub-.500 teams, including seven games in 10 days against a Nationals team that just unloaded its best players
Of the six teams in the hunt, the Cardinals — the current NL Central leaders — have the softest strength of schedule heading into the final nine weeks, an underbelly that includes a five-game series against the last-place Chicago Cubs and six straight games against the Pirates to finish the season.
“You have to take advantage of the schedule,” right-hander Joe Musgrove said. “When you get teams you’re supposed to beat, you’ve got to beat them. It doesn’t mean you approach the game any differently. If you sit here and say, we’ve got an easy 30, 40 games, whatever it is left, then you get to the playoffs and you’re going to face the top of the top.
Given the additions to the offense — Soto, Bell, Brandon Drury and Fernando Tatis Jr. before long — there’s seemingly little doubt they’ll lap their offensive production during the four-game skid they carried into Monday .
