Padres pitcher Dylan Cease has already outperformed his 2024 salary since coming over from the White Sox in a March trade
Checking on the Padres’ bid for a wild card as the season moves past the quarter mark: It’s hard to overstate the early returns of A.J. Preller’s trade for Dylan Cease. Obtained March 13, Cease went into his start Tuesday against the Rockies having outperformed his $8 million salary. Cease’s 1.7 win shares heading into Tuesday equates to $13 million in industry value as estimated by FanGraphs.com.
Cease mustered improved velocity, better control and more aggressiveness, making him one of the most difficult pitchers to contend with in the big leagues, as evidenced further by his NL-best fielding independent ERA of 2.27. Even if his MLB-leading .179 batting average allowed on all balls in play wasn't likely to hold up, it was a dominant first-quarter.
