They spent a portion of the ’18 season batting back-to-back in the Rangers’ lineup and both hit 20 home runs that season.are better for it. Literally. Mazara, though, was out of baseball at the end of 2021, having been designated for assignment by the Tigers. He spent the fall and winter remaking his swing and signed a minor league contract with the Padres in December. He began the season in Triple-A, where he had a 1.095 OPS before being called up to replace injured right fielder Wil Myers.He has spoken a lot about the work he has done and the renewed confidence and consistency in his approach.
“As hitters, you have ups and downs, and maybe he had some downs with other teams,” Profar said. “But he’s the same guy that I know. I’ve seen him doing those things with the Rangers. I was very happy when he came here because I know what he can do, especially on the team that we have. He’s like a secret weapon in the back of the lineup. On other teams, he can be a cleanup hitter, he can hit third. On the good team that we have, he is hitting more back in the lineup. And that’s great for us.
“We just were not very good,” Gore said. “I’ve had to figure out how to get better, get ready for tomorrow. … I don’t think it’s something where we needed to overthink it. You look at it, figure out what you need to do for the next one. We’ve been throwing the ball pretty well. It was gonna happen at some point.”
