This is not a story about the previous three days or the previous three weeks. This is about how the National League’s third-best record was achieved — rather improbably considering their inability to consistently score — and how the Padres intend to get better so they can make the playoffs for the first time in a 162-game season since 2006.
They are 16-10 in games decided by one or two runs, the majors’ fifth-best record in such games. They have come back to win 14 games, tied for second most. They have played the most extra-inning games and won more of those games than any team. “I would say we would have to get some really, really good starting pitching if you were to tell me that,” he said. “That’s exactly what has happened.”
“I think it’s pretty impressive for us not to swing the bats the way we expected to be winning as much as we are,” starting pitcher Joe Musgrove said. “I think we’re in a good spot.”
