Jackson Merrill has a knack for getting an RBI with getting a hit; Robert Suarez is working a lot, but he is also getting his rest; Kyle Higashioka has special day off;
Padres closer Robert Suarez, left, shakes hands with catcher Kyle Higashioka after finishing off the Padres’ 4-0 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday. That is thanks mostly to magnificent pitching but also because they are doing just enough offensively.The game story largely focused on Luis Arraez playing through injury and Randy Vásquez’s excellence. Bryce Miller’s column is a ground ball guy. Just able to get enough to bring him in — or not enough.
Suarez, who is tied for fourth in the majors with 23 saves, has also worked four or more outs in eight games. That is third most among those top 23 closers.Seattle’s Andres Muñoz and Oakland’s Mason Miller are the only closers who come close to having done both of those things as much as Suarez. “We don’t prefer to do it all the time,” Shildt said. “But he’s gotta pitch when the opportunities present themselves, and sometimes they’re not always save situations.”
“They were starting to get some swings on him a little bit,” Shildt said. “Hadn’t gone that deep in the game consistently. It was the third time through — not that that’s some magical formula. But it can be an indicator … you want to get it ahead of time. And he had some guys coming up that could swing the bat. He did a great job. Did his part.”
“He’s been compromised with the return of Bogey, but that’s a good compromise for the team,” Shildt said yesterday afternoon. “We’ll pick a spot here soon, I’m sure, to get him a start,” Shildt said. “But he’ll be ready to come off the bench and get that good at-bat for us.” “It was cool to hear the stories of all the battles he fought in,” Higashioka said. “It was a long time that his unit was fighting in Europe. They were pretty heavily utilized. It was pretty amazing he even survived the war.”
