Josh Hader stood at the back of the Padres’ bullpen last night watching Robert Suarez throw more pitches than he had all season and blow a one-run lead.
If those things happened, the Padres would win a tiebreaker based on having a better combined record against the other teams in a four-way tie with the Cubs, Marlins and Reds or a three-way tie with the Cubs and Marlins. If the Marlins don’t get to 82 wins and the Padres are in a three-way tie with the Reds and Cubs, the Reds would go to the playoffs.
He also has not pitched more than one inning this season, which definitely could have been helpful a few times. Thing is, he has hardly been used over the past eight weeks. Hader has already thrown three more innings than he did last season, but he has pitched 13 innings in 15 games since Aug. 1. There are 22 closers who have pitched more innings and 21 who have appeared in more games than him in that span.“I’m available,” he said.“Always four outs, isn’t it,” he said. “Three in a row. Always something. … I mean, I’m not sure what you guys want. It’s the same thing every time.
