After the long audition process, Kim found out she’d gotten the role of Sunja in an unusual way: She met up with the casting director offor what she thought was an early birthday dinner. “Then, all of a sudden, my casting director ordered Champagne and she said, ‘Congratulations,’” says Kim. With a grasp on the trials that Sunja would have undergone on her journey, Kim focused on perfecting the dialect from Sunja’s rural area of Korea. “It was really hard because people who live in that part of Korea, they’re really sensitive about that accent,” she says. “I tried to be perfect about that accent. So it was really hard because every time I have to focus on the emotional things, my accent was wrong. But every time my accent was right, my emotions weren’t attached.
