Democrats on the state House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday passed a bill eliminating the requirement for courts to provide gun storage to visitors, a move recommended in a task force report to address courthouse security concerns.

Republicans voted against the measure, and – in yet another indicator of the sharp partisan divide over gun regulation – also voted against a resolution recognizing Gun Violence Awareness Month.strikes Pennsylvania’s current requirement that courts provide lockers where people visiting the courthouse can check any firearms they are carrying.

This is a particular issue for Magisterial District Justices’ offices, said the bill’s prime sponsor, Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester County. These local courts are often located in office buildings or strip malls. The 2020 report noted that many MDJs do not have the space or staff to securely operate a firearms locker, particularly in high-conflict court cases.

and acknowledging that it is “a public health and also a public safety crisis,” said Rep. Carol Kazeem, D-Delaware County, the resolution’s prime sponsor.
